
Arrows must be long enough to be safe, stiff enough to tune correctly, and suitable for the bow and archer. Choosing only by advertised bow weight is not enough because actual draw length changes the force delivered to the arrow.
Start with actual draw length
Have your draw length measured while using a safe training arrow or measuring arrow. Do not cut new arrows to the shortest possible length. Beginners often gain draw length as posture improves, so extra safety margin is valuable.
Know the weight you actually hold
Recurve limb markings are normally based on a reference draw length. If you draw longer or shorter, the weight on the fingers changes. Measure with a suitable bow scale at your normal draw length.
Use the manufacturer chart
- Identify bow type: recurve, compound or other style.
- Find the measured draw/arrow length range.
- Find the actual draw weight range.
- Use the recommended spine group.
- Check whether point weight, shaft model or compound cam speed changes the recommendation.
Arrow components matter
Point weight, shaft length, nock, fletching and insert weight all alter the dynamic behaviour of the arrow. Cutting an arrow shorter makes it dynamically stiffer. A heavier point generally makes it react weaker.
Safety checks
- Never shoot a cracked carbon arrow.
- Check nocks for splits and loose fit.
- Check aluminium shafts for bends.
- Make sure the arrow remains safely supported at full draw.
- Replace damaged points, inserts or fletchings before they become a hazard.
Beginner advice
Do not buy expensive shafts before draw length and bow weight have settled. Club equipment and coaching give you time to learn your measurements before spending money.
